Royal Enfield Bicycles 1955 model range brochure
Royal Enfield bicycles brochure from the fifties. I haven't been able to identify the year exactly but it is marked '1154' on the back page. I'd assume this to mean November 1954 so this looks like the 1955 model year range brochure.
I'd like to try a bike with a full oil bath chain cover, as shown in the catalog. As a kid I tried a variety of mods and maintenance to speed up my bicycle. The one thing that made the greatest difference was giving the chain an overnight bath in oil.
Oil bath chainguards are indeed wonderful and sophisticated devices until you need to do a puncture repair and they get old and generate all manner of unfixable scraping noises! I learnt these facts the hard way working in a bicycle shop in my youth. A large percentage of older roadster cycles that survive are missing their chaincases for just these reasons.
