Singer 1913

The photo isn't in great condition but none-the-less a terrific image of a rarely seen bike. Apparently on the way to or from a hockey match this chap's Singer is a very sporting machine. An exhilerating bike to ride back then and even nowadays. I date the machine as 1913 but am happy to stand corrected if there are any knowledgable Singer types out there.

Jolly hockey sticks! 1913 Singer.

  1. Bit short for a hockey stick, he's not transporting skates and it's not winter, there are leaves on the trees. Soccer goal in the background. Perhaps the stick was to be used in sort of a motorcycle polo match? It's about the right length.

    1. Hi David, don't want appear argumentative but it's definitely hockey! I think Stateside you call it field hockey? Hence no skates and the goal is a fair bit small than a football / soccer one. Field hockey used to be a fair bit more popular as a men's sport than it is nowadays.

  2. Reg last used 1919, so about right. You have to love the USA, evidently they think Rugby with body armour is football!! Won't mention girly games like rounders and netball or it might cause an international rift!!:-D As for Hockey, some of those public school girls teams are fearsome.

  3. :-) a girls public school hockey team in full shout would probably scare the pants off you. [Our pulic schools are pervesely 'private ones'] I'd back one of our more brutal rugby players against any USA 'football' player without his armour, have you ever seen one in action?
